If there are bands that have travelled the world to settle themselves in another place, it usually are Australian bands. AC/DC is a name that comes to mind. They moved from Melbourne to London. Well, here's another band that did the same, although they made a stop at Eindhoven in the Netherlands in between. The band is DESTRÖYER 666, and they play Old School Blackened Thrash Metal. And they do that with a vengeance.
I have been listening to their brand of dirty filthy Thrash for a number of years, but have to admit that I had lost touch for some time. I can honestly say that I am glad that I have reconnected again, because I was missing a really filthy band in my oeuvre of the latter years. Although, when I listen to "Never Surrender" it might be a dirty business, it still is a lot neater than anything they did in the past. DESTRÖYER 666 have allowed a proper production to be let loose on their music, making everything just that little bit cleaner than I am used to.
Is that a problem? Not really, as they still play as if the world is going to end tomorrow. Subtlety is a word that never was and never will be added to the vocabulary of DESTRÖYER 666, and listening to "Never Surrender" only enhances that feeling. Like I mentioned, the fact that this album has a good production makes everything just that little bit easier to listen to. And although I understand that this will not be to everybody's taste, it does make it easier for new fans to be added. And once they are hooked, it will be a piece of cake to have them look back and discover the back catalogue.
I do need to mention that even though I really love DESTRÖYER 666, they never have written songs that rise above being good. It never becomes outstanding. Not that this matters, as they are about the full blasting experience. May it be on record or live, they do know how to blow you away. They don't need high class songs; they just need to make sure you notice them. And that, my friends, is a given. If you dare listen to "Never Surrender" you will be submitted to subliminal messages that will draw you in, entice you to endure the music of DESTRÖYER 666. Once you have listened a few times you will have to admit that they are the band with the perfect music to unload all your frustrations and emotions. They only need to play like they have always done. "Never Surrender"? I'm afraid you will, though.
