DESERT COLOSSUS is a Stoner Rock band from the lowlands of Holland, presenting their third full-length release, "Eyes and Tongues". The album is independently released and became available back in early January and can be found easiest via their Bandcamp page. The band is comprised of Frank Zoomer (Vocals, Guitar) Frank Fey (Drums, background vocals, Synths & Trumpet), Tom Colle (Bass, Accordion, & Backing Vocals), and Leon Van Wijk (Guitar, Background Vocals). Together, the quartet have unleashed an entertaining, if somewhat predictable release.

First and foremost, Yes, you did read correctly that DESERT COLOSSUS utilizes some less than standard musical instruments to their approach to traditional Stoner Rock. One might be used to hearing keys, especially in Stoner music that leans more Psych, but Trumpet? Or, perhaps even more shocking, accordion? Yep. That's right. They use 'em, and maybe surprisingly, they us them well. Make no mistake, this is a pure Stoner vibe, through and through, but the usage of these less traditional instruments definitely adds a unique edge.

When I mentioned predictable, here's what I meant. Pick a random Stoner band out of the ether. Can you guess who their influences are? Likely SABBATH, KYUSS, FU MANCHU, TRUCKFIGHTERS and so on right? Well, that's exactly what you get with DESERT COLOSSUS. I'm not saying that it's bad, or ripping any of those bands off, but it's becoming too predictable, not only with this band, but as a genre as a whole. Innovations in the sound; reinventing the sound is key to this form of music growing and expanding, and I'm just not sure the usage of brass, or accordion are enough to distinguish one self from the pack despite however unique they remain.

Still, it's a good solid collection of songs. With seven tracks coming in a just about 45 minutes, I found it pretty enjoyable. The title track being my highlight, followed by "Tear Me Down". I also quite enjoyed "Null" and the closing "Final Signs of the End". There's bold riffs, bad ass bass runs, and solid drumming throughout. Vocals were well done, though lacking in much dynamic range. Production and mixing are well executed with all levels distinct and complimentary to one another. It's just that damn predictability that lingers. Solid effort nonetheless. Check it out.
