Denial - Obsequies of The Immemorial album cover

DENIAL are a Mexican Death Metal band from Mexico City. Formed in 2006 and releasing only 1 LP in 2009 through Asphyxiate Recordings, the band self-describes their sound as being a mix of 80s and 90s DM with an edge of their own to the sound. Based on the 8 original compositions I heard from this compilation, I'd say I can get behind that. There is a significant amount of OSDM influence in their style, but also a bit of modern metal.

As I mentioned earlier, there are 8 tracks here that are completely original, two of which are live recordings, and another two covers. I'm gonna look at them in those categories.

First, the covers, they mostly sound like typical OSDM, though "The Elder Race" opening riff is easily among the best Death Metal riffs I've ever heard. The "normal" songs are pretty good, especially the first two, ESPECIALLY the opener, "Remains" which is an exception of the album's main flaw, but more on that later. As for the live tracks, I love their sound design, and I think "The Involution of Kingly Spirits" is 10 times better live. You can just feel the energy of the playing, the vocals, the rawness, it's incredible. As for the negative aspects of the album, I felt like (save for the first track) most of the songs here were too long, MUCH too long. I enjoyed the first 3-4 minutes, but it falls flat and loses the intensity in the last few minutes.

If all songs were 3 minutes long, I'd give this compilation a 7, but like this, it's only a 6.
