A Dracula

The album "A Dracula", the second full length album by the Las Vegas Doom Metal band DEMON LUNG finally begins after four long minutes of intro. The intro is part of the first song, "Rursumque Alucarda", for that you should not be alarmed of an album opens with an over 9 minutes song. Unlike other Doom bands, this one has a more edgy and fast music. Not as fast or hard as other metal music, off curse, but they do have a sound usually heard in harder bands. This is absolutely a good way to start with me.
Even lingering and heavy, DEMON LUNG are not as disturbing as expected, but interesting enough to keep the listener alive for a song or two. But you should stay a bit longer, because it's the third song, "I Am Haunted", is when it all comes to life. The songs have the sound of a horror movie, more than that of a metal album, much like KING DIAMOND only a lot slower. They all work together, and are right on the bit. The guitar seems to be doing something else, besides the normal chords. It has actual lines! The bass is in the background, but from time to time it has some interesting parts for it to shine up. Of all those, the vocals are way in the back and are not the strongest part sound wise. I sure was surprised to see the awesome Shanda Fredrick. She almost doesn't let any actual female vocal to come out of her, but from time to time you can
hear a feminine whisper. Her angel-of-death like singing is astonishing, too bad like in
any other Doom band I met the vocals aren't the main interest.
The songs are long, as in 6 to 8 minutes per song long, but unlike other heavy-slow bands, it is somehow right and it's not difficult to stay tuned for the entire album. In the song "Deny The Savior", there's something really off, yet in the same time exactly on, exactly what is needed. The song, even though slow, is hard and heavy. There's a smooth sad part in the middle that is just great. The vocals in this song are much better then all others, and have a certain depth to it. Altogether, those give the entire song the extra volume and purpose it needs.
All in all, DEMON LUNG are not bad, and even though I do not enjoy the genre of Doom Metal, or at all slow music that could have been faster without harming anyone, I did like this album. I would love to hear the vocals louder and more forward in the complexion. There's great potential to her voice, and more of it is needed here. Moreover, I would also like to hear more of the interesting guitar lines such as in the beginning of "Mark Of Jubilee". I have enjoyed this album, although it is not completely my type or maybe very far from it. With a bit more work and balance,
DEMON LUNG might be a name that will remain for a long time.
