Degial - Savage Mutiny album cover

DEGIAL is a Death Metal band based out of Sweden. Formed from the ashes of DEGIAL OF EMBOS in 2006, the band had previously released a Demo, an EP, and one previous full-length album. "Savage Mutiny" is the second, and contains eight tracks. "Doomgape" is the opening song. After an instrumental lead-in, it picks up pace with thick, dark Death vocals and a steadily running riff and percussion. The title track, "Savage Mutiny," is a little shorter in length and has a different rhythmic pattern. The one constant is the double/quarter time drumming which provides the backbone for the song. There isn't much variation in terms of chords used however; it remains in the low register and doesn't go much beyond that. "Uncoiling Chaos" features some dissonance in the opening but quickly leads to about the same sound and meter as the previous two tracks. The evil and brutality are obvious but there isn't much else going on.

"Deathseige" has a similar structure, and pretty much solidifies the album as very homogeneous. I realize Death Metal has some fairly strict boundaries but I have heard other albums work better within those confines. "Pallor" is a six minute track with an opening unlike the others so far. The riff plods slowly and with definition at first, but too soon the bombast is back as before. "Revenance" is the first track to feature the bass guitar out in the open but again the guitars and drums take over pretty quickly after that. This time however I like the flow of the chords in the riff, as it's a bit more open. "Sanguine Threat" has some lead guitar dive-bombs in the opening and then a riff that sounds like disorganized chaos. It's really hard to follow the musical direction here at times. "Transgression" closes the album. There is a little more meat in the track but again nothing new or original. If you like traditional Death Metal you may find this to your liking, but it just didn't offer anything new for me.
