Deflore & Jaz Coleman - Party in the Chaos album cover

Jaz Coleman needs no introduction. The leader of KILLING JOKE joins Italian instrumentalists DEFLORE to deliver an Industrial Metal odyssey that sounds as natural as lively. Taking the language of Coleman's original band, contemporaries like DEPECHE MODE and those inspired by them, like NINE INCH NAILS or RAMMSTEIN, "Party in the Chaos" reaffirms the versatility and vitality of the genre.

This three-track EP begins with the title track, an energetic opener with rich arraying of its electronic elements, synth layers and heavy riffs. During its five and a half minutes, "Party in the Chaos" builds an intense and oppressive atmosphere, barely finding a gentle release in the breakdown around the two-minute mark. The repetitive and mechanical nature of the rhythm adds to the feeling of having all your senses in overdrive.

Taking a Post-Rock route, "Sunset in the West" functions as an exercise in crescendo-ing and decrescendo-ing. With dramatic, almost gothic synthesizers, soft tremolo guitar, and a slow but steady rhythm, the instrumental builds and disarms itself over the course of nearly eight minutes. It feels much shorter, however, a testament to DEFLORE's ability to sustain the listener's interest. The sound is quite reminiscent of GOD IS AN ASTRONAUT or the more ethereal moments of 65DAYSOFSTATIC.

"Transhuman World" offers some influences from Krautrock, particularly from electronic masters KRAFTWERK. With a more danceable and aggressive rhythm than the previous songs, it is a wonderful closer to this EP. Its science fiction vibes paint futuristic scenes, to which the slightly robotic vocals contribute. Catchy riffing puts the precise accent of Rock energy.

Production throughout the EP is more than appropriate, highlighting the diverse textures and melodies, with each small beat, synthesizer or riff filling the exact spot it should. "Party in the Chaos" only flaw has to be leaving you wanting more from this collaboration than just three songs. It feels like an appetizer before the real main course. Coleman has a voice that fits the Italian duo perfectly, and you can sense the chemistry between the three of them.

Despite its short duration, the EP is successful in presenting the idea of this particular collaboration and demonstrating how interesting it can be. The three tracks are catchy, diverse and creative. Hopefully, DEFLORE and Coleman will decide to create more music together in the future. I know I would be happy to listen.
