Defiled Embrace - Whispers of the Forest album cover

From Bandcamp, "This is the debut full-length studio album by Israeli Doom Metal project. "Whispers of The Forest" is an eight song album that present the similarities between the human suffering and the death of different nature elements, alongside songs about love and loss. The album contains slow and heavy songs, with soft and clean melodies, colliding with brutal riffs and growls, giving it a strong Death Metal vibe." The album contains eight tracks.

"And the Clouds Cry" is the first. Fittingly, rumbles of thunder and rain open the song, followed by sullen piano notes. Deep death vocals are next, followed by some higher screams. The mood is very depressing. The title track features a bit more ominous power. The piano notes play well with the main riff. It begins a crescendo after the half way mark, then eases up to the end. "Dusk" is of course when the sun begins to set. As a metaphor, it could be related to the slow death of the self. But, some of the most beautiful sunsets can be seen at dusk, and there is a frail beauty in darkness. The vocals rage with thick bass notes and a slow, clodhopping pace. Through three tracks so far, the band most reminds me of SWALLOW THE SUN.

"Empty Room" is a longer offering, giving the melancholy sounds proper time to cook along with the raging elements. I like the meaty bass notes in the opening, along with lead guitar. One of the better parts of the album is how balanced the despondent elements are with the angry ones. There is another strong crescendo towards the end. "Like the Withered Leaf That Fell" begins with sad but beautiful piano notes. I picture an old tree in the forest with magical properties and face that tells tales of a thousand years past. The lead guitar work here is pretty strong.

"Autumn" is of course the season of death. The strings and Dorin's heavily laden harsh vocals provide a different texture. If you can't feel the anger, like hot breath on your cold skin, you might want to make sure you are still breathing. "Scarred Trees" is the shortest on the album, beginning with clean, solemn vocals that give way to harsh laments. The lyrics talk about "mourn for us, because we are no longer among the living." The lengthy "In Her Sullen Reflection" closes the album. Sullen leads that seem to cry along with heavy bass notes open the song. Deep harsh vocals combine with depressing rhythms and thunderous drumming at times. It waxes and wanes, like the seasons of your life, ending on a decidedly depressive note.

This album is a gut-wrenching kick to the stomach. The Doomy elements are enhanced by deep death vocals that sound as alive as they do slowly dying. Death is all around you, death of the self, and death of your loved ones. How will you deal with changes in your life...with the evolution or demise of your soul? Why are the far reaches of the forest so cold...so magical...yet so fatal? What lies beyond? These questions and more are answered on "Whispers of the Forest," so lie back, dig in, and soak them up.
