Decembre Noir - Your Sunset | My Sunrise album cover

From their EPK, "as for the direction of their new album, DÉCEMBRE NOIR reveal the following: "Your Sunset | My Sunrise" is the cry for inner peace set to music. A heavy heart full of tears, which threatens to plunge its bearer into the abyss at any moment. Even if this means giving up oneself, in the end only the long-awaited silence counts. It is the escape on the wings of addiction from the battlefield of never-ending depression." The album has six songs.

"Dead End: May" is the first. The tones are majestic, and lead to a heavier blueprint, with a mix of clean and harsh vocals. May is usually one of the best months of the year, but it can also signal the coming of summer, and some people prefer the cold solace of winter. The spoken words in the middle are dreadfully depressing and as it moves to close, it grows angry. "Against the Daylight" has a faster pace, and is shorter. The depressive tones are also coupled with some feelings of struggle, especially in the mid-section of clean guitars. It's almost like a hermit coming out of hiding and into the sunlight for the first time in months.

The title track gets to the heart of the yin and yang of the title, and it's all about perspective, in that someone's sunset can be another's sunrise. It has hasty tones, especially in the guitar leads. "Sentimental Giants" begins with doleful clean guitars. Harsh vocals roar in, with enough bombast to wake the dead. It waxes and wanes a couple times throughout, and this intensifies the feelings of hopelessness. "Sleepwalker (In Yesterday's Smoke)" has rougher edges to go along with the biting harsh vocals. Someone is waking up in a haze but about to get a fire under him to his purpose.

"Trivial Heart" closes the album. Double bass drums roll forward with some lead guitars. The vocals are somewhere between frightening and sorrowful, but always with an earnest touch. Overall, this was a beautifully depressing album. When you think of Doom/Death Metal, you can't help but think of veteran acts as INSOMNIUM and SWALLOW THE SUN. Though there are similarities, this album is more straightforward, with only sporadic use of clean vocals and piano and the like. Call it a bit more traditional, perhaps? They leave the fluff behind, allowing them to more clearly focus on the stinging Death and hopeless Doom.
