Supernatural Addiction (Reissue)
Deceased

The supernatural has probably been the peak of the wicked curiosity. It might have killed a few cats, but it didn't whack the human cognitive mind that is always hunger for more information, to discover the beyond, what is frightening, mysterious, comforting and maddening. Like stepping through a wooden door to discover that there is no light source, only the gripping darkness, there is no stopping the addiction, the utter control of morbid beliefs and the consuming fear that looms from the ceiling. Trust the figurative twisted mind of the deranged King Fowley to seed a world of chaos in order to let his DECEASED clan play through the world's weakening nerves right into the past fortunes to one of their vanguard releases based back in the new millennium, "Supernatural Addiction", originally unleashed via Relapse Records, and now reissued by Hells Headbangers Records. I have never listened to this album before but only to the band's latest along with the several of the 90s releases, but I could sense a sort of change in the band's musical perception, from Death / Thrash to a sort of crossover between Heavy, Thrash and Death Metal with a slight featuring of Punkish and Hardcoric foretastes. However, I could still feel the insanity and fixation for the deliverance of something bemused and out of this world, evil and ready to combust.
After I tagging this album for some time, it made me wish that their latest release, "Surreal Overdose", would have sounded closer to this fine filthy creation of pure lunacy and psychotic nature. "Supernatural Addiction" puts King Fowley performing his best vocal action, shifting from raspy, ghastly tones to some sort of smooth growling. His meticulousness reminded me of old Peter Steele, stilling bashing with CARNIVORE, and Chronos of VENOM. Essentially, DECEASED's music on this album seemed rather similar to both CARNIVORE (even the first adaptation of TYPE O NEGATIVE), SLAYER and VENOM but also sharing that blunt pre-Death Metal accord of POSSESSED and the first chords of DEATH. Take a huge bowl, intermingle those together and you will end staring at something mucky, manic, boiling red hot with shots of recklessness and irrationality. I have to admit that at some point it became a sort of disorientation, but I didn't care, everything went wild but didn't lose the mark. DECEASED surveyed the supernatural with high octane drumming thanks to blast beating butchery of King Fowley along with the guitar class acts of the twin axe machines, Mike Smith and Mark Adams, supported by the strong input of Lee Snyder crushing on the bass. I was overwhelmed by the shifting between rhythm types, from Metal to mere Punk, surging through the pits of Death with conviction. I was also blazed by the melodic glitters facets and the mind blowing soloing that dazed my head.
"The Premonition" is without a doubt my number one pick out of this album, an explosive track that should be recognized as a classic blaster and a leading pattern for future material, also in order to shape up a better album after "Surreal Overdose". This track has it all, Death Metal drumming mania, coercive guitaring and stalwart singing. "A Very Familiar Stranger" and "Frozen Screams" are whack jobs, plain and simple, total madness, but an enjoyable piece of corrosion any Metalhead would want to embrace closely. "The Hanging Soldier", seemed quite mysterious from the top, but revealed as a decisive Thrasher, but stuffed with evil and robust riffing sliding the fields of depravity. "Elly's Dementia", the pounding bomber, a slow tempo, quite modern in direction in contrast to the other songs, appeared to be morbid and scary, like a measure out of a horror show. Frankly, this album presented itself like a repulsion display, but go figure that out when you lose your mind. In a few last words, a must have album in every home; get ready for endless pounding because the dead love to play hard.
