Solitary Martyr
Deathwhite
DEATHWHITE is a Melodic Doom/Goth Metal band based out of the United States. This is the band's second EP release, and contains five tracks.
"Pressure" is a soft breeze on a waning fall day, where the last leaves have fallen and the chill of bleak winter is approaching. You walk a lonely path through the forest with nothing but your sadness. There is most notably a KATATONIA influence to this song and I have always enjoyed that band. The vocals are pressing; yearning and emotional. The track also builds nicely into a crescendo of double bass at the end. "Suffer Abandonment" has little more pick-me-up in terms of pace and overall instrumentation. But, the melancholy aspects of the song are still very much alive. It is both heavy and soft at the same time, something that is difficult to accomplish in the genre of Metal but beautifully powerful when you can.
"Vain" has a more traditional riff and a mid-tempo pace. I like the use of acoustic guitar when it carries the main melody. The chorus really shines here, with vocal harmonies that soar. "Solitary Martyr," the title track, has more of a sonic presence. The varying chords hit hard and the despondency is immediately noticeable. There is also more of a gloomy sort of suspense in this song; almost like I sense a big turn coming around the corner that never does. It's like watching a black rose wither...can you both rejoice in the beauty of the rose and be saddened by it slowly fading. Closing the EP is the song "Only Imagined." The acoustic opening is a diverse way of starting out the song as compared to others on the EP. The main riff is hard, heavy and poignant. Sometimes it is the space between chords that really provides answers to the mystery of how hard the music can hit you emotionally.
I have to say that this kind of music is usually not something you find state side, but rather in hot beds of the Nordic countries usually. This is a wonderfully done EP.
