Deathcode Society

First of all, I never really enjoyed Black Metal ever since I really discovered Metal in 1993. I wasn't too keen on the vocals and even Death Metal it took a very long time to appreciate anything that had harsh vocals in it.
Ever since the mid nineties, a lot of bands from France have emerged in the Black Metal Scene. DEATHCODE SOCIETY are from the relatively small town of Annecy in France and this is their first full length album.
The production of this album isn't the greatest and that's a pretty big deterrent to me usually. But this is Black Metal and Black Metal has never had the best production value anyways. A lot of times, I feel that the singer is overshadowed but the blast beats and the guitars and that gets on my nerves to be perfectly honest but I tried to ignore it as much as I could.
A pleasant surprise was the presence of classical/Spanish guitar in some songs including ''Seraphic Requiem'' and it does add a little something special to the album in question. DEATHCODE SOCIETY remind me a lot of EMPEROR and DIMMU BORGIR at times and I believe that's a pretty good comparison. The drummer is a machine and Blast Beats are all over the album and as for the rest of the instruments, other than the lead guitar, we don't have it in the forefront unfortunately.
The singer, well this was a pleasant surprise, I detected some influences here and there, sometimes I feel he sounds like Alexi Laiho from CHILDREN OF BODOM, sometimes his screaming sounds like some Devin Townsend but most of the times he sounds like the lead singer of EMPEROR.
The little extra cover song at the end is a nice touch, they do a pretty good rendition of ''Metal Meltdown'' by JUDAS PRIEST. It was a great way to end the album and this was a pleasant surprise in the Black Metal Genre.
