Death of Giants - Ventesorg album cover

From Bandcamp, "Ventesorg" is the debut album of this Norwegian Doom Metal act.  Morten's wife, Sandra, passed away from brain cancer in 2018 at 31 years-old. As a tribute to her memory, and as a way to deal with his grief, Morten started writing the songs which now make up the debut album. This concept album is built on a semi-chronological narrative, from the cancer diagnosis to her tragic death. The title of the album describes accurately what the album portraits through its melancholic Gothic Doom atmosphere: It conveys the journey from a long distance relationship between Austria and Norway, the bond of two families, a wedding shaded by the overwhelming shadow of cancer and the inevitable outcome three-and-a-half years later." The album has six songs.

"Premonition" is the first. It's a very short mood-setter, with ominous and tense tones. "Was It All a Dream" is a slow, deadly grind, with warning bell strikes and deep gutturals. I can feel his emotions in the song, but can't imagine what he is going through. Clean vocals follow, and they are just as emotive. The alternating vocal passages probably reflect his moods at the time. "A Sense of Urgency" features both melodic and clean passages, and deep gutturals where the power increases exponentially. The harsh passages reflect the sense of urgency and frustration that he must have felt when the diagnosis became real. The music is very moving as well, through a variety of emotions.

"Distance" reflects the differences in his location compared from where he lives to where his wife lives, and the inevitable frustration that must have existed when he wasn't with her. The harsh vocals echo his pain. It runs through a series of twists and turns, but those piano notes at the end will get you. "Only the Good Die Young" is another gut-wrenching song. Death seems so final to those left behind. I went through this when my mother died recently, and the grief never really left. I find his interpretation of this IRON MAIDEN classic to be very well done. He draws out the chorus to really leave a mark on the listener. I a cruel twist of fate, the title of the song seems so true.

"Das Ende Ist Da" closes the album. It means, "the end of here." The grand finale of the tale is eleven minutes long. Tender tones open the song, reflecting the numbness one must feel. You want to just shut off the world and retreat. But the main riff is a monster that comes crashing through your front door. It's also an ode to the memory of his love. Overall, I really enjoyed the album, and I felt that the tale of what he went through was reflected in the music. I imagine that some of the compositions must have been cathartic as well, and I can't imagine the hell he went through.
