DEATH HAS SPOKEN is a Polish death/doom metal band, who formed in 2017. Their latest album, "Call Of The Abyss" is their second full length; they also released a split album in 2020. "Call of the Abyss" is a doom album that lives in two worlds-and thrives in them. The music is melodic yet also permeated on the Gothic elements. The mix of these two styles of doom makes this a sorrow laden album but one that is also catchy-you won't want to put this album down. Karol and Marcin are a solid duo, each of them complimenting the others style on the guitar. For every riff, there is a counter melody or harmony.
The vocals are strikingly caustic with serrated edges that cut deeper with each use. Despite how brutal the death growls are, they work more than well enough with the music. That classic sound of brutal vocals with melancholic music is hard to mess up but DEATH HAS SPOKEN nails it. Like any good doom band, the rhythm section is where the bulk of the power comes from. Mikołaj's drums are powerful but also crisp and clean. Maciej's backs it all up with a firm but melodic sound that appease the heavy moments and compliments the melodic ones.
The album opens with the title track, in which ominous sounds grow into a steady melancholic rhythm-the band finds their footing early on and never loses a step. This song knows when to hang back and let the slower moments sink it but the drums have their own moments where they double down on the bass, adding in thunderous rumbling. The middle portion is bittersweet and moving yet beaten down and hopeless. Isn't that what doom is all about? "Woe" is one of my favorite songs on the album. I love the dim melodies that languish around like ghosts in the wind. The bass keeps the song solid as a rock through and the drums provide optimum flow. The heavy riffs that accents the vocals add yet another layer to the song, turning it into a dense dirge. The damn bursts after the song finishes its world building at 5:42, making the last couple minutes a engaging experience as it flows back effortlessly to slower passages.
"Crawling To The Tomb" is a massive track. It is deep with a nearly impenetrable darkness that settles into its catacombs. When the vocals kick in, a shiver goes through me--so deep, pained and utterly lost. The entire song feels like someone grasping for their final moments in life; they want to live but the understanding and acceptance of finality is there. The drums highlight many of the darker points but the guitars bring so much atmosphere to the song with simple but weighty riffs and bleak melodies. "Under The Flame" ends the album on a high note. The beginning is drive by Gothic melodies that slide smoothly into a flowing river of riffs and growls. The lead guitar is emotive at just right spots, making appearances in between the growls. The song never goes faster than a crawl but the despair is frantic in its own way.
"Call Of The Abyss" is a dark journey that is unforgiving yet highly engaging. Any fan of extreme doom needs to have this on their wish list.
