"The Hydra's Tailor" is DEADLY CIRCUS FIRE's second full length album. This London based quartet already has a debut e.p. and a full length studio album under their belt. They also have a strong following, judging by the over 10,000 pounds the band raised via internet campaign. One of the most prominent elements of this album is diversity.
Although by all means DCF are a heavy/progressive Metal band, they are not afraid of turning of the distortion if they feel the song calls for it. For instance, the opening track "In Darkness We Trust", only comprise of keyboard and vocals. Long acoustic intros can also be heard on the songs "Devil's Opera" and "Rise Again". Adam Grant's vocals are correspondingly both melodic, whispering, growling and screaming all in the course of 12 songs.
The album as whole has excellent sound, top notch playing and production. Although named after a book by Robert R. Wilson that deals with "wide range of disgust phenomena", it causes the exact opposite- it will leave you admiring the maturity and musicality of the band.
I don't like comparing bands to other bands, but one name that came to mind and is also cited by DCF themselves is TOOL. DCF reminded of them both in song writing and in the ability of 4 people to sound like at least a 6 piece band.
Another interesting about DCF is that two band members are music college graduates (guitarist Save Addario and bassist mike Enort). Being a college graduate in a rock band is like painting a target on your forehead (believe me; I'm saying this out of personal and painful experience). One would expect that going to music school will make your music less spontaneous, less true, less rock'n'roll. This is definitely not the case for this band.
