The Sheltering Sky
Dead Soul

DEAD SOUL is a "Dark Electronic Doom Blues with Industrial Rage" band based out of Sweden. A two-piece act, this is the band's second fill length album release, and contains ten tracks.
This is definitely some interesting music. From the opening notes of "Until the Last Breath," I knew I would be in for a wild ride. The electronica marries the Doomy melody in a way that is difficult to describe. Vocally I am taken back to THE DOORS of the 1960's. It definitely has a Classic Rock feel to it among the post-modern electronics. "The Fool" has a more update pace and crosses over into the realm of Punk at times. But the chorus is an all-out affair, extending the sound with some more depth. "Shattered Dreams" by contrast is much more mellow and soul-bearing, like a defeated cowboy wandering the desert alone, with only his memories left. "Dirt Road" is mostly just piano and voice and is depressingly beautiful, with just the right amount of key strokes but without a big sonic presence.
"The Abyss" has a dancing keyboard and more electronica to accompany the long vocal notes, drawn out for full effect. This track does a nice job of building along the way, holding out suspense until the crescendo fulfills the end. "Home by the Sea" might be the best combination of brightness and despair on the album. The guitar melody is playfull while the remainder of the instrumentation and vocals are on the darker side. I like the way this track opens up and swallows you slowly. "Thy Will be Done" is more of a statement of imminent doom and loneliness, calling "There's angel in the sky, that will great me when I die...just six feet of deep, dark dust." I think this song really sums up the overall emotional presence of the album nicely. Closing the LP is "The Final Day." It is very fitting closer, pouring out as much despondence as possible with leaving you wanting to walk out the door and never return.
DEAD SOUL is perhaps the best band title I have heard in a while, because it perfectly sums up the feeling the band imparts through their music. Overall this really an eclectic mix of a lot of different sounds. The constants are the downtrodden vocals that have a wicked vibrato, and the overall feeling of doom that is pervasive in each track. Falling somewhere in the Rock spectrum, it is a curious collection.
