De Profundis - Beyond Redemption album cover

I really enjoy listening to new bands that have something to say. DE PROFUNDIS is one of them, a multi-national band (that has London as base), which I had the opportunity to see performing live about a month ago in MMD Festival here in Greece.

Their history in the world of music begun in 2005, when Craig and Roman joined forces. After several changes, the band finally completed its lineup. So, even though the album reached Metal Temple just a few weeks ago, they recorded their album Beyond Redemption in April 2007. The recordings took place at Warehouse Studios and the CD was mastered by Tim Turan at Turan Audio (DIMMU BORGIR, OPETH, EMPEROR). Just a few months after the release of the album, the place behind the drum kit was taken by Stergios Moschos.

If we would like to say what kind of music DE PROFUNDIS plays, we could say Doom Metal. But this is limitative for the band, since they are mixing it with Black/Death Metal and some experimental parts that are leaning towards Jazz. And the good thing is that they are not another 'clone' of MY DYING BRIDE or PARADISE LOST as most bands from the U.K. are. Fortunately for us, DE PROFUNDIS chose the difficult part of neither copying those bands nor putting 'gothic' elements like other bands do. And, no, they are not crawling in slow tempo compositions. Their songs have some fast parts and the changes in rhythms gives them a bonus credit. Nice melodies and Aleksej's bass give a Jazz-y touch.

To tell you the truth, I didn't expect such a good album from the band. Nice, long compositions, with nice work on the rhythms and the guitar solos, while we shouldn't forget that this is a self-financed work and a very professional one. I'm looking forward to listen their next album!
