One More Shot
Day of the Jackal

Today, many bands are revisiting past sonorities to breed their own musical works. Some of them have success in their efforts, creating something different and worth of being heard, and others not as expected. What separates them is the matter of copying what others did in the past, or taking the clichés and working with them in a personal way. In the case of the quartet DAY OF THE JACKAL, from Leeds (UK), they’re extremely good, as heard on “One More Shot”, their latest release. Recorded, mixed and mastered by James ‘Atko’ Atkinson (the same guy who already worked with CARCASS, ANGEL WITCH and others) at The Station House, Leeds, the band used its large live room to record things in the most organic form possible (even recording with a real drum kit) and with some old recording techniques of the 70s. The essential sonority is defined and clean in an actual form, but bearing the spontaneity of a Rock ‘n’ Roll release, and it’s a great result.
Musically, the band trails a path between classic Rock ‘n’ Roll, Hard Rock and with a touch of Punk Rock of the 70s, without being attached to one of these genres or to time (it doesn’t fit on modern models, but they don’t have an old-fashioned outfit as well). It is spontaneous, uncompromised, built upon very good melodies and with catching parts, without extreme technical instrumental parts. What are you waiting to have your own experience in their music? The nine songs of this full-length are extremely good, and it’s impossible to describe what’s heard in the sense of this or that musical genre. Just spin the album and hear to “One in the Chamber”, “Take Your Life”, “Man of Many Lifetimes”, “A Little Time”, “Inside”, “Getting Better”, “No Justice”, “Turn It Up” and “Maria”, because all of them are really great. If one says ‘I don’t like it’, this one isn’t into Rock ‘n’ Roll, simple like this.
“One More Shot” is an excellent release, and for those who don’t care for genre’s names, DAY OF THE JACKAL is the band you were looking for.
