Five Steps on the Sun
DarWin
From their EPK, “The epic Five Steps on the Sun is once again co-produced by legendary drummer Simon Phillips and the team expands their signature sound with new levels of depth and urgency. The record features a stellar lineup including keyboardist Derek Sherinian, guitarist Greg Howe, and Indian bass sensation Mohini Dey. This is progressive rock of the highest order.” The album has ten songs.
“Soul Police” is first. It has a swing and an attitude, with old school keys, and harmonized vocals. It’s written in a basic blues key, and they also display some of their musicianship in the song. “Be That Man” has heavier structures, especially from the main riff, and you can hear the sense of urgency in this darker song. The vocal harmonies are nice, but one observation so far, it lacks that punch that you hope to hear from out of much Progressive music. Keep listeneing though. “One Step on the Sun” is a short, piano led introduction to the title track, and it is gorgeous. The title track continues this vibe of melody. The first two song weren’t overly memorable, but the ones that follow sure are.
“The Sun” follows, along with light thunder in the background, and I am loving this continuation of a strong melody line. They let it ride, like a smooth car ride on a summer day, where there is no traffic, and damn, are those leads impressive. “Imitation Suede” is another song with a groovy swing, and strong vocal harmonies. It has a simple melody, but it is quite effective, and the guitar solo is amazing once again. When you have Greg Howe and Andy Timmons” in your backfield, this is what you can expect. “Hulks & Heroes” has a heavier and more ominous sound, but those glorious melodies shine over. The bass work is also strong, but the song is more about sweet vocal harmonies that anything else.
“What Do We Know” brings the album to a close, and it’s another beauty, with a calm and smooth sound that just puts your mind in the right place. Overall, this was a delightful album where the collection of well-known musicians took favor in songwriting over wild musicianship. They showed restraint from the skills taking over the vibe on the album, which was a collection of smooth, easy-listening tunes that will start your day positively.
