In the year 2007, two 14-year-old Belgians, Marcel Zapkey and Luca "Veikko" Johnen, got together to listen to music and jam. It was then that they decided to form a band and, as a result, they created OVERNIGHT. They soon recruited Jean Nyssen on bass and Jacky Dodemont on drums. By the end of 2008, they changed their name to DARK LAMBENCY and the band decided to play Melodic Metal music. The year 2010 saw them release a demo and they began to play all over Europe from small bars to summer festivals. "Frozen Art", is released in the year 2012 and they continue to tour and support the album. 2013 sees them reach the quarter-finals of a local talent show and in 2014 they tour their native country, Belgium, as well as neighboring Luxembourg. The band then released their debut album entitled "Spectra" in the year 2017, via 7Hard records. The band to date has performed over 100 concerts in seven countries.
"A Curse" is the first song of the album and it starts out sedately enough. The melody is more pop than Metal and the band makes good use of backing vocals and organ. The melody is fetching, the guitar lead accomplished. Midway through the song, distorted guitars make their presence felt and the song has a chorus that is memorable. "Change" starts off with an organ based melody and is accompanied by a distorted riff. This is faster than the previous song and the lead vocals are gnarly. The song has guitar sounds interwoven with keyboard arrangements. The track sounds like a straight up regulation Symphonic Metal track and has a soaring lead guitar solo. "Left Alone" starts off with an almost Groove Metal riff before the keyboards ruins the party. The main riff of the song is rather gritty and the vocalist tries his best to ruin the grim mood. There is interplay between clean vocals and growling vocals. The chorus is tedious and the song seems to lack direction and is all over the place. "Revolution" has a bass doodle in the beginning with keyboards as company and the main riff is accompanied by a guitar lick and the track is a rapid brisk affair. This track also features exchanges between clean vocals and growling vocals. Towards the latter half of the song, the riff turns into a chugging melody that sounds a lot like Scandinavian Metal staple. "Twisted Mind" is the last track of the album and like most tracks of the album, it is around the 5 minute mark. The song starts off with a spoken word part from what sounds like a desperate woman, while the tempo builds in the background. The song then explodes to life at around the 1-minute mark with growls before the clean vocals join the party.
The album has an amateurish feel to it and it falls flat on a few places. The clean vocals are not strong enough to carry the heavy sound and the songs lack the depth and variety of Symphonic or Melodic Metal genre. There are bits in the vocals that make an awkward fit with the melody and the pronunciations are not in the pocket. Having said that, there are, however, several bright spots in the album. Given the fact that these guys started out relatively young, this is a commendable effort. The band does manage to create an atmosphere with the use of keyboards and they do manage to churn out some serious heavy, groove filled riffs. The lead guitar work on the tracks is up there and the use of guttural vocals works in their favor. Overall, the band has a promising career and the production on this album is rather good.<
