Daeonia - Crescendo album cover

Underground music, a not very well known part of the music universe, is getting darker and more melancholic each year. From out of this dark and mysterious dimension comes a new band under the moniker Daeonia.

Daeonia have been around since October 1994 and released a demo in 1997 called Morphic Lands, which caught the attention of the A&R manager of the English Candlelight Records. Their first album, Craven, was released in June 1999. Two years later the deeply gothic-influenced band, despite the departure of their singer and some other problems, decided to make another dark rock orientated album.

Crescendo, their new album, which was released on March 12th 2001, is a really melancholic album. It's a voyage through deep, inner emotions and thoughts. A voyage under the sorrowful voice of Louis and the mysterious keys of Jorrit who really reminds me of Pink Floyd (Influence? maybe). The bass, the guitars and drums are great too and remind me of new wave sounds combined with gothic of the 80's, adapted of course to perspectives of our days. There are 12 tracks in Crescendo, all filled with wonderful riffs and melodies (I'm telling you, the keys really kick ass). I guess if there had been better work on the vocals part of the album, it would have really made me stick to the album. I mean, all the musicians are really talented but the vocals kind of ruin it for me. On the other hand, it's a gothic-underground album, so I guess it's just fine (when it comes to vocals) for all the dark-underground fans out there. The song The Bridges of The Ashes reminds me a lot of Pink Floyd in the beginning. Actually not only this song, but the general atmosphere in the album reminds me of P.F. You'll notice that there are a few moments in the album when you'll think that Louis is trying to imitate Iced Earth singer Barlow (or vise versa but I doubt it hehe) but pff...not really...only for a couple of minutes. Within the Blink of an Eye is for me the most sad (really sad) song in the album. You know, slow..with a few keys...and very sad vocals. The Ghosts of Christmas Past is a very weird song with an interesting story to tell. In Cimmerian Dreams reminds me kinda of Sisters of Mercy's playing style , only slightly. Oh, did I mention Sisters of Mercy? Well, Daeonia did their version of Alice in their previous single and even though I haven't heard it, I heard that it was quite good!

If you're into Underground, Gothic, dark rock or whatever the result is called if you mix all those things together, Daeonia's Crescendo is an album which you'll listen to more than once.

The year of the dragon has become the year of Daeonia instead ...........The Goths are reborn...Blessed Be..
