Cryptopsy - The Book of Suffering (Tome 1) album cover

Sometimes, when people complain about new ways into Metal, my mind always thinks about extreme Metal, especially Death Metal. Yes, because into Death Metal boundaries you can create and mix whatever you want. It seems that Death Metal is a fertile soil for cultivating new sonorities, and for the sadness of Dolly Metal clones, this phenomena seems to have no end. And we are truly lucky to find very good bands as the Canadian quartet CRYPTOPSY, that comes back to assault our ears and torment the clones with "The Book of Suffering (Tome 1)", their new EP.

Having almost 30 years of experience on their shoulders, it seems that these guys will not give up of their Brutal/Technical Death Metal, thundering across the hemispheres of Death Metal fans, fast and aggressive, but with excellent musical technique always, especially when we are talking about the drums. Yes, even with the band working as a unit, what Flo plays on his drums is something astonishing in terms of technique. And the result is something really as oppressive and brutal as fez can think of.

The sound production was done by Christian Donaldson (the band's guitarist), the mixing by Jason Suecof, and Alan Douches worked on the mastering. The result is a sound quality is clear as they need, with very good tunes in all instruments, so no complains here. But it's abrasive and heavy as hell, giving the band enough resources to sound aggressive and thunderous as they need.

For those that already know CRYPTOPSY's work, "The Book of Suffering (Tome 1)" brings nothing new at all, but "Detritus (the One They Kept)" (fast and aggressive, but with some good tempo changes, with some nice beats on drums and excellent piggish tunes on vocals), "The Knife, the Head and What Remains" (with very good work on bass guitar, in a middle of a well worked song), the excellent "Halothane Glow" (a fine collection of extreme guitar riffs, having some very good tempos again and an excellent drumming again) and the musical massacre called "Framed by Blood" (some sickening guitar solos and again great grunts) are all very good songs, as of course the long time fans will love it as always.

Very good work.<
