If only could the gutters talk, tell their stories in the dark. What fortunes would they unveil? Probably a lot of the green stuff that is swarming through them with tons of rubbish and filth. Bursting from the sewers of their town, the trio Death Metal creatures, CRYPTIC BROOD, sent their pound of flesh with their debut album "Brain Eater", newly signed to the Spanish underground Xtreem Music. Continuing the groggy nature of their EP "Wormhead", putridity is the name of the game, as CRYPTIC BROOD badly want to join the fun and enter a vast heritage of bands that remained loyal to the spirituality behind Death Metal music, the original themes that survey the process of Death and beyond, such themes that made people shiver at first listen.

CRYPTIC BROOD, similar to bands of their wave of old school Death Metal that holds nothing back, seem to have zero tolerance towards modern production, they virtually spat in its direction. Think of their extreme execution as mingling of early ENTOMBED / early PARADISE LOST / AUTOPSY / HELLHAMMER along with dopey dumps of BLACK SABBATH of the 70s. Therefore, as you may notice as the first drips of muck hits your face, the quality of the recording and mixing is not of this decade or last decade or even some of the decade before that. "Brain Eater" is a piece of meat, like a demo from the late 80s / early 90s, dark, mysterious and raw, which also means in mediocre condition.

Material wise, "Brain Eater" presents a band that is running around in their limited spectrum. Between outbursts of sheer aggression to the struggle in the muddy waters, howling in pain slow tempos, they tried to enter everything in a decent bag of rotting entrails. Their playing is primitive, can be a bit lifeless and unmoving, yet it still has a nice drive, a gross motivation to create oblivion, portraying a scenery of a slowly decomposing corpse. "Gorging Severed Pieces" may as well be their complex case of hard to the core Death Metal that explores the mournful Doom realm in a fine standard, producing a selection of solid riffs that delved in three decades. There are even a few lead guitar sequences that came knocking, assert anguish. The song "Brain Eater" persisted the same elements of the former, achieving a few catchier notes that made it shine slightly more in the album's obscure darkness. "Until It Starts to Rot" finished the album quite well, had me thinking what would have happened if the band had made sure that their album is mixed well, needless to say mastered in at least a decent manner. Probably won't ever happen.

CRYPTIC BROOD relive the past, they sink in the mud of the old, gasping the fumes to keep themselves alive. "Brain Eater" is a solid effort of early Death / Doom Metal, pursuing the praise of the past into a modern Metal future that isn't going anywhere, but deep below the ground, in crypts, something is slithering.
