Cry My Name - Reflections album cover

Stereotypical Metalcore is somewhat like a double edged Sword. Granted that you might enjoy it, but on the other hand, the lack of originality and complexity might create a sense of boredom when played repeatedly. In a generation where one can find a plethora of stereotypical Melodic Metalcore acts, over time some of them get a good response for the ideal use of the stereotypical elements. One such Metalcore act is CRY MY NAME.

As a German Melodic Metalcore act known for their consistency and extreme musicianship, these Melodic Metalcore amateurs released their fourth album entitled "Reflections" earlier this year. With a musical approach similar to that of Generic Melodic Metalcore bands but with a pinch of Groovy and Catchy melodies in their sound, "Reflections" serves to display their talent and evolution. If one is a close observer of their musical career, they might analyse their advancements and improvements. Standing firm on the typical melodic/aggressive approach of blending catchy hooks and choruses whilst performing adrenaline filled breakdowns, "Reflections" proves that Melodic Metalcore is indeed enjoyable. The album presents fresh pieces of lyricism that range from human struggles to motivational anthems. Here is what the band had to say about their take on the lyricism:

"On the new record we came up with themes that really concerned us; in private as well as in general. So there are songs like 'Changes,' where we are telling to stand up for who we are and we got songs like 'Recover,' which criticizes how we are dealing with the world we live in. It will definitely be something new for everyone who knows us and for everyone who doesn't; it will be the best first impression of who we are."

The songs are insanely catchy and enjoyable, but not for those who hate Generic Melodic Metalcore (without a genuine reason); it's always fun watching someone claiming Melodic Metalcore is bland, with no genuine arguments to support this point.

Anyways back to the album, the interesting songs on the tracklist worth giving a shot are: "Reflections", "Recover" and "Awakening". These songs in particular have the most catchy passages intertwined with well crafted guitar riffs. There isn't much to say about the rest of the instrumentation since I don't see anything unique about it. The vocals are done perfectly and some of the 'cleans' executed here might give you chills.

With 'originality' being the only flaw here (in my opinion), the album is pretty good. "Reflection" is definitely for fans of BRING ME THE HORIZON and BURY TOMORROW, as the wide range of similar musical characteristics might captivate the fans. I did expect more for a fourth record,  but I do see some huge potential in these guys and I believe we will get some good stuff from them in future. I shall add them to my list for future reference, looking for more complex textures and a different approach.
