Crooked Thieves

Melbourne's , (via Fitzroy, Victoria specifically) CROOKED THIEVES have arrived with their EP, "Adrenaline". A self released project for the band that formed in 2018 and only recently solidified with it's current lineup. CROOKED THIEVES are seeking a foothold into the crowded midst of the Hard Rock/Post Punk/Modern Metal scene, and I'm of the opinion that "Adrenaline" is a damn fine start.
"No Mercy" is a fine introduction, being chock full of chugging riffs, thundering drums, chest thumping bass lines and the passionate vocals of Jamieson. "Whatever Happens" has an almost METALLICA feel to it. Not METALLICA circa "Ride The Lightening", but rather METALLICA circa the "Black Album", which would make sense considering the youthfulness of the band we have here. My only complaint is present here though. There are times that the song bogs down a but too much. The tempo/pace just left me wishing it would speed up even just a bit. But it's a small complaint, all things considered. At times Jamieson's vocals here even reminded me a smidgen of Hetfield. At other times and other songs, I could feel influences of Eddie Vedder, Cornell and a touch of NOTHING MORE's Jonny Hawkins.
If pressed, "Hellbound" would be my go to track, and likely my favorite through each of my listens. It possesses a 'darkness' that isn't quite as present in the other tracks. "Maniac" lives up to it's title, and in my head I can visualize the band completely frantic playing this one live. The vocals are a bit repetitive, but again a small complaint, as the overall feel of the song is infectious. All in all, I really enjoyed "Adrenaline" and will look forward to a future full length from CROOKED THIEVES. They're a band full of talent, youthful optimism and energy, and there's few things more rock 'n' roll than that.
