Forming in 2011, the Melodic Death Metal quintet CRIMSON HILL reside in Istanbul, Turkey - and "Denied" is their debut full-length album after unleashing a couple of singles via the internet. Given the popularity of the genre in Scandinavia, it makes sense that the movement spreads to outer locales, and I think this works to the band's benefit in establishing their own take on this style.

So it really shouldn't be shocking to the system that musically guitarists Ahmet Aydemir and Can Ersalici throw a few exotic, Middle Eastern licks into the mix for a different melodic aspect to tracks like "Blind with Hatred" and very catchy "My Bloody Lover". The band appear skilled in the art of changing moods and tempos at the drop of a measure, as drummer Hasan H. Ucma can throw down speedy double bass and snare parts and then become quite intricate and fluid at a modest mid-tempo or doom pace.

In terms of the vocals, Mete Aker has a raspy delivery during the verses, along with a death growl when he needs to match lower proceedings. I would say the man has studied the best work of IN FLAMES and CHILDREN OF BODOM on "Truth Within" and personal favorite "Wings of Death", and can also slip in some John Tardy/ OBITUARY grunts to liven things up. The melody part definitely comes in on the music end- as CRIMSON HILL chose to open certain songs with classical-laden parts (check out the first few bars of "Salvation") or even take a little throwback to early IRON MAIDEN in terms of the spider web riffing for "Message to Continue". With no songs over 5 minutes, you can expect quick hitting hooks and riffs that never overstay their welcome - and a production that is equally honed in on the viciousness.

"Denied" is an effort that reminds me of the early appeal of this genre, and should be a great start for CRIMSON HILL to build upon for the future.
