This is the latest studio work of the band of Doom and Black Metal from New Zealand, whom have 10-year career and are most promising. Despite being a relatively short work with only 5 tracks, the album proves itself, however, it could be better exploited in the creations of more rhythmic guitars referring to Doom Metal with more severe vocal mixing with the brutality of the torn vocals of M. Pavlovic.
We begin with the instrumental "Death Knell Offering" which demonstrates the strong influences of BLACK SABBATH's debut album, an interesting mix with CANDLEMASS. However, it would value more serious vocals to bring an atmosphere more "dark" to the beginning of the disc. Thus referring to the essence of Doom Metal.
In "Scythes Over My Grace" we have extremely harsh riffs of brutality accompanied by a fierce battery. The singer shows all his power in gutturalness without fear, the music ends in a more gloomy way. More valuing Doom Metal in the vein carrying the band. With "Cold Soil" the impression right off the bat that gives it is that we were placed in a horror movie, with a very dark song and quite macabre, typical of those scenes where something is coming, and you have a deadly fear. The typical instrumentation common to Doom bands in their work proudly comes forth in here, giving a break to the vocals.
In "Drear" there is the presence of a more guttural vocal contaminating the music during the extremely rhythmic and instrumentally gloomy verses, employing interesting melodic touches. Ending with "Revenant", the working title of the band's album, brings nothing very innovative than hasn't already been presented on the disc. They could have exploited the serious vocal vocalist and leave out the resonances of torn vocal and extreme , bringing more gloom to the cd. The mix of Black and Doom Metal is quite functional, but it would be more interesting if it had been better exploited to create more harmonic items among the instruments to accompany the deep voice of the vocalist.
While they're certainly of a high calibre within their genre, their new release doesn't quite stand out amongst the sludge.
