Creak - Depth Perception album cover

From their record label's webpage, "Lyrically and thematically the tracks are saturated with pure emotion, fueled by - amongst other things - the anguish that accompanied vocalist Jack Dunn's mother's journey with cancer. Using CREAK as an outlet for his processing his feelings during that time, he comments: "I was feeling guilty about my own emotions, and going over things in a circle in my own head trying to get to a point where I could try to become comfortable with them." Finding it easier to work through his feelings through his lyrics than to verbalize in 'real life', "Depth Perception" is something of an anthology of dread, pain, mortality, and hope. The album has 12 songs.

"Crossroads" is first. The sound is low, and quite chaotic, and you can hear the rumbling bass like underneath it all. The vocals are incensed, and they also take advantage of messing around with some effects. "An Endless Black" is another heavy and dissonant sound where the anger comes through strongly. I can't imagine what he went through with his mother's diagnosis, but this would probably have been my response also. "Doomed" is even worse...the cold, sterile sound probably reflects the state of Jack's head at the time...just lashing out at everyone and everything.

"Restless Dreams" is the first video released by the band, and it showcases some of the band's skills with the timing passages and even has some clean vocals. The song is still meant to hit you hard and it does. "Left to Heaven" is as dismal as it sounds. Clean guitars and vocals carry the song, which just sounds very level to me...kind of monotone. That is also an emotional effect of what Jack went through. The title track bends back the other way with resolve and anger. The low end of what the band is able to accomplish is deep and cavernous, and the cadence of the vocals supports some Hardcore leanings. "Cold Shoulder" is a tale of two sound...angry, harsh, aggressive vocals and riffs that give way to clean euphoria in the choruses. Still, the anger is very pronounced.

"I'm Not Alone in the Dark" is a short song where perhaps this is what Jack is trying to convince himself of...but the reality strikes cold and hard. "A Head Full of Rain" closes the album, with even more rage. The guitar riffs are very dissonant and the vocals reverberate in your soul. The hospital machine beeping at the end really bring the album into perspective. What I believe the album did well was to reflect the feelings of the experience Jack went through. You can hear the pain, the anger, and the disbelief in his delivery. But the love he had for his mother is also there, buried deeper for those who take the time to listen.
