Count's 77 - Count's 77 album cover

COUNT'S 77 is a Rock and Roll band based out of Las Vegas, Nevada, led by singer Danny "Count" Koker, who is the star of the History channel show "Counting Cars."  The band is influenced primarily by 70's style Rock and Roll.  This is their debut album and contains thirteen tracks.  "Your Love Ain't Right" kicks off the CD, with old school, fuzzy guitars, and a steady cowbell beat.  We timed lead breaks accent Danny's raspy but soulful vocals.  There is energy here and a feel-good attitude.  "Let the Rockin' Do the Talkin" is a mid-tempo number that does just that.  The chorus is on full display here, and with the message in mind.  "End of the Day" struts in with some real swag, where Danny's vocals seem to be in the perfect range for the music.  The jovial chorus reminds you to get up and face what you have.  "Lovin' Like This" is a bit swifter in pace, with a riff that reminds of early KISS.  Prolific use of wah-wah peppers the big chorus.  The slide guitar in "Shame on Me" takes me back a bit further, with a swinging feeling in the versus and well done vocal harmonies in the chorus.  The riff to "Riding with the Sons of Perdition" has a very strong presence, and exudes confidence.  There is an "in-your-face" attitude here in this track in particular that perhaps sums up the sound of the band the best.

"My Machine" is a down and dirty track, with a low end, gritty riff, and just the right amount of instrumentation.  Sometimes it is easier to say and do too much in a song, but this is an example of where it is just enough.  "Save a Little Something for Me" is a slow, emotional piece, where the power and fervor of the message is delivered at just the right time.  Danny's vocals take center stage here.  The cover of "Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo" is fresh, upbeat and nicely jammed as well.  Closing the album is the track "Snortin' Whisky."  This is another strong track with a Southern Rock tinge to it.  Overall, it is hard for this kind of retro rock to be fresh, but COUNT'S 77 have managed to do just that.  To be honest I have heard a lot of retro rock lately and there is definitely a movement in this genre towards those days.  Much of it I haven't cared for, and just didn't feel the riffs and chops were up to par.  This is not the case here with COUNT'S 77.  This band could have been around during the 1970's and would have offered some real excitement to the genre at that time.  It's a strong collection of Hard Rock hooks and choruses, energy and attitude, sensible and memorable melodies, and a capable collection of musicians.  This is music that you don't have to overthink, just enjoy!
