Cosmic Putrefaction - At the Threshold of the Greatest Chasm album cover

With only 500 Facebook likes, and no information on the band on Facebook or on Encyclopaedia Metallum, there is little to know about the band. Save for the fact that it is a one-man project that self-describes as "dark death metal from the cosmic depths." "At the Threshold of the Greatest Chasm" contains nine tracks.

"The Perpetual Orbit" leads us off, with broken spoken words and ominous guitar tones. It begins to pick up and then a deep riff drops from sky, pulverizing everything in its path. "The Acrimonious Darkness" is a furiously fast and heavy song with deep and aggressive Death Metal vocals. It's a fairly short song without much else going on. "The Unheard Shrieks" is another two-minutes of bloody brutality, like a serial killer on a spree. It doesn't let up until there is nothing left of you, with a weighted break down. "The Herald Prophecy" is another short song. They seem to prefer these types of songs...it's probably too much energy spent to drag them out, because of the intensity used.

"The Ancient Demagogue" is three minutes in length, and opens with a slower pace and more horrid sound overall. The drums roll over everything, like machines cracking and pulverizing skulls underneath the weight of it treads. "The Outermost Threat: Part I" is a shorter piece, setting up part two nicely, with ultra-low guitars and vocals. Seguing into part two, with simulated cello strings and a darkness that holds you there. Eerie piano notes come into play with muted screams in the background. Oddly, it stays barely present for much of the song, until a crescendo at the end with a heavy riff and what sounds like the end of the world.

"The Ruinous Downfall" is the longest song on the album, at just under five minutes. It builds with a slow cadence and some guttural utterances. It waxes and wanes, with steady guitar presence, and varied vocal styles. The guitar solo is all over the place. "The Dismal Black Nothingness" closes the album. It builds into a slow, lumbering pace with vocals that are held for effect. It picks up into a fast and furious sound towards the end. Overall, I found the album to be as described...dark Death Metal from the cosmic depths. It does sound like it came up from underneath your feet, from chasm formed a million years ago that just opened up and swallowed you whole. You are falling the entire time, never reaching the ground. The blackness and Death around you it utterly whole. I, Voidhanger has done it again, finding another diamond in the rough.
