Finnish five-piece, CORPSE MOLESTER CULT's second EP, "Benedictus Perverticus", following from their debut, shows that the seven years between the two releases have done far from soften the death metal sound of this group. Remaining pure evil and spouting loud, high-speed, simple, growl-filled music, the four tracks on the EP all grab the listener by the throat and proceed to repeatedly tear it out over, and over and over.
Opening with shouting and yelling over ever-increasing feedback, title track, "Benedictus Perverticus", kicks off this EP with a definite sense of unease, before kicking into a dark and groovy riff. The vocal work is gruff, growly and guttural; very deep and harsh, before ending on a very short, chanted section, which returns to the creepy, evil feel of the opening.
"Raped by Seven Zombies" has a lot more contrast, moving between a faster opening and a much more groovy section, including moments where instruments drop out so the vocals are going along just above a bass and drum jam. Either it's the nature of the style of singing, or the band is being complicated, but there seems to be a use of multiple languages in this track. The melodic breakdown, which occurs towards the end of the song, contrasts well with the rest of the track, single notes on the guitar, as opposed to big, chord style playing.
The penultimate track, "This is Where it Ends", (close enough guys, but there's still another song to go...) has another very fast introduction and is again, purely an evil sounding death metal track. There is even a short almost-solo, followed by a thrash-influenced bridge, showing the range of styles which this group take from.
Ending with "Satanic Seed", the EP shows that over the course of four brutal tracks that CORPSE MOLESTER CULT have a consistency and heaviness which is much admired in the underground death metal scene. The four tracks are all incredibly dark and evil, but lack much in the way of contrast and really seem to lack a certain depth that creates a more interesting form of extreme metal, rather than just heaviness and brutality for heaviness and brutality's sake.<
