Album covers with dark haunting apocalyptic themes can often be type-casted in Heavy Metal genre, but there are bands that are still hanging on to them and trying to bring out something unique, both in terms of lyrics as well as sound. Swiss based Deathcore band bring their third record "In The Mouth Of The Devil" this year and let's just jump into it. The album starts with "Purgatory" which is a keyboard driven atmospheric Hollywood style period movie theme song, before turning into a blast beats fest. "You're Next" is a train wreck of juicy riffs combined with blast beats. The band seems to hit this middle spot between Metalcore and Brutal Death Metal. There is a reason why I don't use the word 'sweet spot' to describe that, because I don't think it is. "Falling In The Mouth Of The Devil" shows what dual vocals in Death Metal can get you. It's not the best exhibition of dual vocals (where both are of different growling style, with one of the 2 vocalists being a female), but it definitely elevates and helps the band to get the best sound out of what they are trying to achieve here.
"Down Into The Abyss" seems to bank heavily on the thick bass and guitar riffs which is often the sound in Death Metal as well Sludge Metal. The song has an atmospheric feel to it amidst all the heavy Brutal Death Metal chaos, which differentiates it from any styles of Metalcore. "Let Blow The Grim Wind" has a unique theme riff which is very head-bangable and the pig squeals really bring an interesting dynamics to the song, with the apocalyptic themed lyrics. "The Cult Of The Shining Planet" starts with a very long impressive haunting keyboard work, before the blast beats and the growling vocals take over. "Burn Your Eyes" continues with the brutality, while "Hills Of Abomination" and "Defeat The Red Sun" sound like blast beats and heavy riffs sprinkled among the dual growling vocals. The album ends with a twisted song in "Constellations & Black Holes" with more groovy riffs and more mosh-pit friendly vibe to it. "In The Mouth Of The Devil" is not an album that I would recommend for everybody. It has many issues starting from monotony to song writing, but it's the unique dual vocals and the unique sound of Brutal Death and Metalcore that can excite a few people for this album.
