The filthiest, sludgiest riffs, grim atmosphere and an overwhelming sinister sound. COLTSBLOOD brought us what can be certainly considered a very fine debut Sludge Metal album all the way from the UK. As a fan of the subgenre, I can definitely foretell that this album will certainly rank high on my 2014 favorites list.

Though it's not your typical British Doom Metal, COLTSBLOOD 's style is definitely rooted in that style, however, their sound is decidedly sludgy, as sludgy as it gets. When it comes to this album, you can definitely hear some diversity within the range of elements incorporated in the music; however, you must not expect anything but perpetual slowness, tempo-wise.

"Valhalla Awaits", the opening track, might give you the impression that you're about the venture into a Nordic Black Metal Adventure before it fades into "Beneath Black Skies", a fourteen minute beast that almost feels infinite. Such enchanting gloominess within this track. "Blood", though one of the shorter songs, is definitely one of the most captivating tracks on this album with its great hooks, and in which you can also hear a prominent black Metal influence.

If I had to name a track that can pretty much sum up the COLTSBLOOD sound in its entirety, it definitely has to be "Abyss of Aching Insanity", the backbone of this record that kind of blends seamlessly with the following tracks making it sound endless. "Return to the Lake of Madness" kind of ventures more into the post-metal territory, which I think was partially present in most tracks but it definitely stands out here.

"Into the Unfathomable Abyss" showcases the massive songwriting talent of a promising newcomer band. The album is set to be released on April 21st, and if you too are into this style, do not miss COLTSBLOOD.
