Frozen Paradise

This is the third album release of the melodic Heavy Metal band from Sweden named COLDSPELL. But let me stop you there, for a quick notification. I wish to probe with you about melodic Heavy Metal. Heavy Metal being melodic, so can't I call it Euro Heavy Metal? After my short babbling, I found COLDSPELL to be that Heavy Metal, very popular in Europe. On the other hand, probably the biggest act nowadays following this genre is USA based, what I would like to call a twist of faith, you probably know them as AVENGED SEVENFOLD, therefore COLDSPELL are roaming the streets with some bad ass bands.
"Frozen Paradise", COLDSPELL's newest fling, consists of eleven fresh tracks, so how about a dive? "Paradise" starts with a nice riff right before the Keyboards strikes with full scale assault, very SONATA ARCTICA oriented. Matti Eklund, on Keyboards performs immensely great. "Paradise" took me by surprise as a very catchy, a term which I will use quite a lot throughout this review as it has a massive impact especially on the choruses. It even gets catchier when only the vocals are on display, meaning no other instruments playing, letting the vocalist have its way. "Life Has Just Begun" commences with nice acoustic passage that materializes into a massive main riff alongside profound keyboards, overall a great song, again very SONATA ARCTICA style.
Some kind of twist appeared on "Goin' All The Way", taking the Hard Rock course and turned out to be a classic. However it didn't stop there as "Alive" kept up the vibe as a strongly influenced from European Hard Rock, all in all a nice song. Even with the classics mentioned, "On The Run", is the major badass, conveying a FIREWIND tamed guitars and a hint of EUROPE, heavy infliction spiked by a memorable chorus. Also don't miss "Dark Reflections", a very melodic, catchy as hell with a Southern Rock kind of twist that I didn't expect.
It seems that COLDSPELL like to diversify their music yet with preserving the melodic edge as a prime directive. Much without being a fan of this musical formula, this new album was a pleasant ride with a great production, catchy riffs and keyboards however like many albums even if still lacking the punch for greatness.
