Okay I admit. At first I thought this was going to be one of those REALLY depressive bands with titles like "Depressive" and "Funeral March" but holy crap was I wrong.
I'm not too familiar with "Depressive Black Metal" it's one of those hit and miss genres for me because of the genre title of course, that's just how I've always been with it, but it's not the kind of depressive that would be associated with 'emo culture'; that's for sure. It's heavy, loud, brutal, and just kick arse. I'm pretty sure people who are more fans of Rock, Heavy and Thrash etc feel the same when Depressive Black Metal is mentioned, who knows, probably just my opinion.
However, screw my opinion on that, because the genre and band COHOL KICK ARSE. I never thought I'd say that about this band. I think I really like them because It's labelled Japanese Black / Death Metal so both genres I can tolerate, which highly pleases me. And Japan is one of my favourite countries too so, perfect! I'll get straight to the point with this one, if you like bands like TSJUDER then this is right up your alley. They're so extreme that one may get far too addicted and want more from the bands of this genre you'll listen to.
Not being a massive fan of the genre I'm always willing to give most music genres a chance I do enjoy Black Metal now and then but when words like depressive are edged on I think, eh? I like to be a positive person so it's a little weird for me, but it's still a talented genre nonetheless. It's quite bizarre that a band such as this kick so much arse yet they tend to be a depressive label, I'd personally just label them Black Metal, makes much more sense to me, it's probably edged on for an atmospheric touch, if I want depressive I'd listen to emo bands. Ha.
Despite the label (I felt I had to rant about that), COHOL - "Rigen" delivered a rich headbanging experience with an atmospheric balance of death and misery, being an insane Heavy Metal maniac myself I give all bands a chance, small or big and I enjoyed reviewing this one. Definitely worth keeping an eye out on especially for Black Metal fanatics. Death Metal fans too should probably too, but if you're like me and appreciate all kinds of Metal, take the plunge and check them out.
