COFFEINNE is a Melodic Metal band hailing from Spain. They were born in 2015 playing powerful, melodic, and fresh metal. They are influenced the most by European Metal from Power Metal to Modern Scandinavian Melodic Death Metal. They released their debut album "Circle Of Time" in 2016. It comes in with ten tracks and a listening time of just over 48 minutes.
The opening track, "Fragile", comes in blasting with guitars and bass and drums oh my! The vocals quickly follow. They are more Power Metal style, with their initial range, but they have a little Mathew Tuck of BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE to them. The sound is more BFMV meets newer IN FLAMES work. It is harder but holds a brilliant melody. The musicianship is already showing in just the first track, alone.
"Take this Life", track three, comes in to the hilt with melody and goodness. The drums are quick, but those guitars shred. The bass is perfectly done and the vocals are great. There is a bit of scream action in here too, the amps up the track just a bit. The guitars at about three minutes in is killer. This is another track that proves the talent that resides in this album.
Track five, "Life in a Showcase", comes in with more of an atmospheric sound showing off with a keyed opener. The band comes in adding an enthralling rhythm to the atmospheric backdrop that continues throughout the track's entirety. The bass is heavy, the drums are rhythmic and guitars are airy, but lead with bursting energy.
"No Escape", track eight, is another track that melds so many genres into one great song. The vocals are powerful and commanding, the drums are quick, the guitars create a genuinely exceptional melody, and the bass keeps the track rooted in control.
The name sake and track ten comes in banging. Again, the vocals are powerful, the bass is more prevalent in this track and the drums are perfectly done. While the track is technically solid, the overall feeling is flat. It's not bad, not hardly, just not as dominant as the rest of the tracks on the album. I do love how the track ends though, with the fading music and just the vocals present. It's a nice ending.
The final track, "Life in a Showcase (Orchestral)" is a bonus track. This is done beautifully in full orchestra glory. Being a fan of and playing in an orchestra for a time, this track is my favorite on the album. Not only does it show COFFEINNE's musical talent but, also, their artful ambition. This is a beautiful piece with great emotion and writing, definitely on par with its more Metal mate track five.
COFFEINNE's "Circle of Time" is a great debut album. There is strong musicianship and art throughout the album's totality. In fact, while writing this up, I almost forgot it was a debut, it was so good. "Circle of Time" will appeal to many listeners, especially those who like BFMV, IN FLAMES, and the like. Pick this one up.
