Black Flame Eternal
Cloak
From Bandcamp, "In an era that is designed to beat down and weaken the individual, "Black Flame Eternal" is an album that represents strength, empowerment, and total opposition. With mounting pressure to engage in modern societal tribalism, CLOAK invokes a spiritual rebellion that exists beyond good and evil with album number three." The album has nine songs. "Ethereal Fire" is the first. A heavy riff opens the song with harsh vocals. But this isn't your prototypical Black Metal. There is no wall of guitars...instead there are discernable riffs that switch back and forth from distorted to clean and harrowing.
"With Fury and Allegiance" brings out those Dark Metal elements into the forefront. A slow, grinding pace varies with faster sections that are powerful. The combination of the two leaves the listener on his toes. "Shadowlands" is exactly that...a journey into the dark places your parents always warned you to avoid. The spoken words ring out like that warning, but you go deeper into the forest regardless. "Invictus" is a faster moving song with evil background elements that help to fill in the edges. The guitar work is fantastic...ranging from simple but effective riffs to more inventive offerings, and they drive the sound. "Seven Thunders" is another slower grind that burns all the trails around you with an intense anger. At times, I feel like I am in the middle of a witch hunt with torches in my hands and hate in my heart.
"The Holy Dark" has a rich rhythm guitar section that is augmented with backing vocal chants that are downright scary. Still, some of the riffs sound similar to one another. "Heavenless" however reminds you that the band is not a one-trick pony. This short and slow song has plenty of atmosphere and many of the tones are evil, and scary. The title track closes the album. This song calls forth and summons all the dark and evil creatures that are out there to rally against good. Evil conquers all in the end, which isn't supposed to be the way things are. The best part about the album for me are all the various background elements that both support and augment the riffs. Many of them are quite harrowing, a central theme on the album. The album is limited a bit by too many riffs that sound similar to one another, however.
