Clamfight
Clamfight

Rob Zombie stated on “Metal: A Headbanger’s Journey” documentary that ‘every cool riff has already been written by BLACK SABBATH. Anything everyone else does is just basically ripping it off. Either you’re playing it slightly different or fast or slow, but... They did everything already’, and such words depicts as the music of the Old Witch of Birmingham is important (but don’t interpret things literally, please). When one is dealing with Stoner Metal acts, is like revisiting what was shown by the English lords on “Master of Reality”. And its influence is heard on the music of the quartet CLAMFIGHT, as heard on “Clamfight”.
Produced by Steve Poponi (who worked on the recordings with Matt Weber), with mixing done by Steve along Dave Downham (this last one did the mastering as well), with everything done at The Gradwell House, Haddon Heights, NJ, the idea was to have a sonority that could be defined, but that allows the quartet to express its filthy appeal as well. And the final result is what these words means: a combination between raw instrumental tunes with a very good work in the studio. As guest vocals, here are Sam Marandola on “Brodgar”, and J.J. Koczan and Stephen Murphy on “Clamfight”. And the art of Morgan E. Russell is very good work for what is presented by the band.
Although one could think of a Stoner Metal act (the words written above give such idea), in reality it’s a Stoner/Sludge Metal act with a clear experimental insight (shown on “Oar”, a song that lasts more than 11 minutes), but where the filthy isn’t as important as the band’s musical expression, what means that the filthy is a part of their music, and not something that came to satisfy fans (even because the band’s music is understandable). It's full of energy and personality (even bearing clear influences of the Birmingham pioneers of BLACK SABBATH), and for Stoner Metal and Sludge Metal fans, it’s a delight - although the band’s music will get fans from other genres as well. “The Oar”, “Brodgar”, “Dragonhead”, “FRH” (a short and experimental instrumental), “Drinking Tooth”, “Clamfight” and “Redtail” shows great amounts of energy with solid instrumental parts and very good screamed vocals. But the most important aspect of the album is that the band isn’t relying on models and try to do its music in agreement with their personality, and not as someone’s orders.
“Clamfight” is a very good release to show that Stoner/Sludge Metal isn’t about to play filthy, but that such a mix has intelligent acts as CLAMFIGHT.
