This Rock band hails from the cozy city of Bath. They perform a radio-friendly sound (in the right way) with a close reminiscence to American groups.
The overall production and the mix of the guitars, drums, and vocals are top-notch, vocals are flawlessly performed, but unfortunately, there is no bass, I mean, not only there is no bassist among their members, there are no audible bass lines in the mix. This aspect leaves out one crucial element of any Rock sound: the bottom end. Ok, the last tune "You have it all" has a subdued bass line, but it is not ALICE IN CHAINS "Would" by any means.
I can be indulgent with the modern way of mixing drums, the tiny sound of cymbals and the lack of dynamics on the snare, but consciously leaving out the bass is heresy.Bass appreciations aside, this is a sweet release, it has a solid bunch of ear candy for the melomaniacs, and large hooks for the airwaves. But, was it necessary the growl vocals on the second track "Freak Show"? I don´t think so, especially on the FOO FIGHTERS context of this genre.
Style-wise songs sounded a little bit similar, like a collection of "ok" ideas, yet produced with a significant budget. Which I think is the modus operandi of today´s popular music standards.
The opener "Beholder" sets a triumphant tone for what´s yet to come; pristine vocal performance, bombastic production (with the lack of bass already pointed out) and "shout it out" choruses. "Twist of Fate" has a pounding bass drum kick work and soft lead guitar undertones that explore other harmonic choices. "You have it all" and "The Rains" have some bass (the latter has some 7 string guitar parts) but again, after ten tracks of mostly E-key songs the aftertaste is a groundhog day. "Let it all go" goes a little bit above the surface, with proficient background vocals; this cut should have been the first single.
Kudos for their singer, he is the shining star on this offering. Some bands have great blueprints but lousy productions (which is the case on the post-Napster music "industry"), others, massive productions with sterile tunes. I miss the nineties.
