Churchill - Ravage album cover

CHURCHILL was formed in 2010 by dissident musicians from other bands of the French scene, and now present their first full-length, "Ravage". In the release, the band presents itself as Metal/Rock/Southern Rock, but after the first auditions, I can say that they practice an alternative Rock/Metal, and I could not hear much Southern Rock in the sound. At least not in the style of the pioneers of Southern Rock from USA, like THE ALLMAN BROTHERS, LYNYRD SKYNYRD and BLACK FOOT, for example, but maybe of later generations who drank on that fountain and the Hard Rock from 70's, like KYUSS, MONSTER MAGNET and QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE. These influences, added to alternative Rock, grunge and a little of Metal, we can hear in CHURCHILL's sound.

Lyrics in French may limit somewhat the band to other countries; the vocals are hoarse and screamy, and the songs sounds more direct, based on the riffs, and even get interesting on the first tracks. The track 2, "Replay" (the first track is an intro), sounds very energetic and with a good melody; "Ravage" and "Evidence", follow the same structure and with similar melodies on guitars and vocal lines, including the distortion guitar, mainly using the fuzz pedal...well, that's where lies the album's problem, because the structures, tones and arrangements are repeated, very similar in all the songs, and then, at least for me, the album becomes a bit tiresome and repetitive, and sometimes i had the feeling that I was listening to the same music again.

It's not a bad album, and maybe can please Alternative Rock fans, but fails in that aspect of repeating melodies, tempos, tunes and structures. It would be interesting to the band to get more variation in their compositions in the future, especially if they want to get something more on career. After all, not everyone can be an AC/DC or RAMONES and play very similar songs in an album and still sound great.<
