Celestine - At The Borders Of Arcadia album cover

o tell you the truth the first thing that made a huge impression on me upon holding this CD was its title, since the only Arcadia I know is a place in southern Greece, and if I am not mistaken that's basically the place they mean. What are these Greek loving guys able to offer to us?

The band hails from Iceland, the country that offered us musicians and bands like Bjork, SIGUR ROS, the great Stoner act BRAIN POLICE and the incredible black metallers SOLSTAFIR. CELESTINE originally released this EP on their own only in Iceland, but soon after that, the US label Milkweed Records offered to re-release the album in the US and throughout the world. Of course they didn't miss this chance and immediately signed a contract.

So the EP reached my hands and I can say that I was impressed. From the very first time I listened to them I realized that these guys may be heavily influenced by acts like ISIS, CULT OF LUNA, NEUROSIS and PELICAN, but from their very first work they have managed to absorb their influences and turn them into their very own personal sound. I will disagree with the term Progressive Sludge that some people have given to them, since I never tried to make it hard for the listener. If only one name could describe their psychotic sound, this would be Post Hardcore, although it is kind of a stupid tag.

Their brutal melody, their noisy paradise and their 'epic' riffing are all parts that form the CELESTINE puzzle. I wonder how Relapse didn't notice this hidden little gem. You guys really have to pay some attention to them, they deserve it. Especially you in the whole ‘Post Hardcore' scene will find a brand new musical orgasm in At The Borders Of Arcadia.
