Cavus - Fester And Putrefy album cover

Nowadays, things are very difficult in the music industry. Everything has been played, the chance to listen to something new and innovation is almost zero, so maybe what we are waiting for are the following ones, or even one of the two: i) a band that plays its music from the heart, and/or ii) copying (yes copying, who doesn't do that in the last few years? Even big bands copy themselves) the music of older bands, but putting that 'extra' that will differentiate the band's sound in order to not sound like a clone. CAVUS is a new band from Finland formed in 2008 in Porvoo, by J.K and T.T.T. During their short history, they have released a self-titled EP in 2009 and were the support band in gigs with MAYHEM and BEHEXEN while they inked a deal with Listenable Records. But do they have any of the above elements that I wrote in my prologue?

"Fester And Putrefy" is definitely not an innovative album. And I'm sure that the quintet never wanted that. So is their black Metal, with some doom elements here and there, coming from the heart? In my opinion, the answer is "Yes". Pure black Metal, with no keyboards and other crap! Just blast-beats, harsh growl vocals and nice rifling. The slower parts in some of the songs, alongside the clean but deep vocals, give that something extra to this dark atmosphere. The production is heavy and as clean as it should be. You can listen to all the organs without them being polished and "plastic". If you really want some names just to understand what CAVUS are playing (even though I can't find a reason to do it if you are a Black Metal fan), I'd mention HORNA and GORGOROTH.

"Fester And Putrefy" is, in my ears, a good album. All the elements that we love in old-school Black Metal are here, without sounding outdated. CAVUS made the right step with their debut album and I hope that they will remain in the left hand path. I believe that you have to check them out.
