Cave of Swimmers - Aurora album cover

CAVE OF SWIMMERS is a Doom/Progressive/Hard Rock act based out of Venezuela. The Cave of Swimmers is a cave with ancient rock art located in Egypt. "Aurora" is the band's third release, and contains seven tracks.

"Intro - Through the Star Gate" opens the album. It's a quick, one-minute mood setting instrumental, complete with spacey guitars and keys. Spoken words ring out in the background, segueing to "The Sun." It begins with a groovy rhythm and DIO-esque vocals. It's part Hard Rock, part Classic Metal, with some technical elements. The singer has a lot of vibrato behind his pipes. The guitar solo follows a Classical pattern.

"Double Rainbow" is a shorter song with a more traditional sound. One thing that might help thicken up the sound a bit would be two guitars. It's just...thin. The chorus is nice however, with the backing vocals. "My Human" is an odd song, beginning with Doomy tones in the choppy guitar notes. The keys with just clean vocals in the verses is an interesting touch. Some Progressive elements come out in the form of the meter. This is some unique music for sure.

"Looking Glass" features an odd rhythm where the band uses the open E chord as the bass of the riff. It stretches out with some attacking guitars and the chorus is fully realized, with nice vocal harmonies. "Dirt" opens with some staccato guitar strikes and some eerie keyboard notes. The chorus is again where they gain the most points for melody and Progressive leanings. It ends with a fade-out of South American guitar notes.

"C.S." begins with some pleasing vocal harmonies along with some melancholy clean guitars. It shifts gears towards a heavier sound along with a guitar solo in the second half of the song. It's a fitting closer with some moments of melody and a longing quality, taken over by a more earnest sound.

Sometimes I feel like we are back in the 1970's, while other times I feel like we are being propelled into the future. That's how the album feels to me as a whole. The duo is actually quite talented, and what they have created here is...well...a bit odd and unconventional. But, that is what is appealing for me...the unusual way that they meld all of these elements together, and their strong use of diversity. This is something off the beaten path for sure.https://caveofswimmers.bandcamp.com/album/aurora-2
