Cattle Decapitation - Terrasite album cover

Sometimes you need to listen to something other than your normal music, just to get all your extra emotions out of the way. As I had reviewed CATTLE DECAPITATION before I was wondering how they would be sounding in the current times. The band has been around since 1996, and in those 27 years "Terrasite" will be their ninth offering on a full-length album containing new music. The last one before was "Death Atlas", and that has been four years ago. CATTLE DECAPITATION come from the very sunny and warm climate of San Diego in California. Not exactly what you would call a hotbed of angry emotions.

And those come across many a time on "Terrasite", as CATTLE DECAPITATION doesn't hold back one bit. What I can say that this Death Grind band has learned to master their instruments throughout the years. And they have also been able to improve their songwriting, as "Terrasite" is a mix of Grind-like blastbeats, fast Death Metal rhythms, but also slow pace music with Progressive parts that remind me of VOIVOD and GOJIRA. When you put all these ingredients together you get a very fine mux, making "Terrasite" into a very pleasant album.

On top of that singer/screamer/grunter Travis Ryan is able to use just the right voices to compliment the music. The grunting is really low and menacing, the screams are high and ear-piercing. Both will make you shiver like you would while watching a good horror movie. What surprises me most, though, is when he starts to sing. He then sounds like a younger, stronger version of UDO DIRKSCHNEIDER, and that just is the icing on the cake. Well, I mustn't forget that to make this kind of extremely Heavy Music come across properly you do need the right sound. And that also is way above par, almost perfect even.

I have heard it said that "Terrasite" is not as good as its predecessor "Death Atlas". If that is the case, that one but be almost be called Unholy Heavy Shit. As I don't know that one, I can't comment on it, so I just concentrate on the latest effort of CATTLE DECAPITATION The only thing that I can say is that if you love your extreme metal and you are not afraid to go on an epic roller coaster ride, just try "Terrasite". I have a feeling that it will win you over.
