Monumetal
Catch 22
Every now and then I stumble upon an old school Metal release. Whether it's classic or extreme, it is always a pleasure to listen to bands in their attempts to recapture the lights and feels of the past. Modernity, both in terms of sound and material, has its hold on the new generation of Metal and it can be equally compelling especially if heaviness is concerned. When I listened to CATCH 22, the US Metal band from Ohio, I was glad to hear their devotion to the roots of the music along with their clinging to their old local scene as Thrash / Heavy / Power Metal, all under the same roof. Cool as it may be, it wasn't that cool after I listened to the whole new "Monumetal" package released on the band's new label, Metal On Metal Records.
Only a few of the tracks on "Monumetal" really made the difference for the band. Those were "Twisted, Ruined And Black", the Bay Area enhancer, "Killing Time", a solid time killer for sure and there were "Switchblade Hate" and "Downward Spiral" that left some positive notion.
What about the handling of the album's production? As for the material, the intent was there and some of the arrangements went pretty well but in overall, the mix is too rough even for 80s standards. The main aspect that added to the roughness is the uneven sound of the drum set. On occasion it shadowed the other lines and nearly suffocated the vocals. The guitars on several areas made that same impression.
In general, as I mentioned earlier on, the old school direction of this band was the most notable. If you are a fan of the old METALLICA, PANTERA along with tons of other US Metal bands of the 80s, you will find a few things you would like on this one. However, for others that are a fans of the old era but looking for something slightly refreshing, it would be a downward experience. With no doubt that the old American Metal spirit is alive within this band, and it has been for years, but a little bit of effort and creativity will nurture it.
