Case 39 - Kick the Devil album cover

CASE 39 is a Rock n Roll loving trio from Northern Germany. The band got together back in 2016 and recorded a 5 song demo a few months after. Now, three years later, their debut album "Kick the Devil" has been unleashed to the world and there's no holding these guys back. This band describes their genre as Sleaze Rock with Punk influence. I've never heard of Sleaze Rock before, but it seems to be fitting for what this music sounds like and sums up what this Rock trio stands for...the Rock n Roll lifestyle.

"Kick the Devil" sounds like if MOTORHEAD and CLUTCH were blended together. The sludgy distortion and the low gravelly vocals, plus the groovy guitars make for one fun opening track. "Full Speed" is much more Punk driven. It's a short track but has the catchy Punk style riffage and lyrics. "Living Like Vampires" is the essential Punk Rock "Sleep all day and rock all night" anthem an album like this must have. "Grandsons of Elvis" is more of a rebellious track lyrically. The guitars are still the more familiar Punk riffs throughout. "Romantic Fools" has a NOFX feel about it but is kind of a strange sounding song overall. The vocal style was off-putting in this track. "Concrete Shoe Company" has a really cool and catchy bass line. This song has a Punkabilly feel, like you're riding on a motorcycle on the desert highway to Vegas... to meet up with some friends to kick someone's ass as the lyrics seem to depict.

"Anti-Rockstar" is a fast paced song, it's almost hard to understand the words with how quick the tempo is truthfully. "The One I Love" is a more emotional track lyrically. It's rather catchy for a song about heartbreak. "Summertime" has a dreamy feel with the slower yet still upbeat riffage and quaint melodies throughout. I enjoyed the horns added in at the bridge; it was just a bit of Ska tucked into this song. "Man in a Boat" is the final track and it's one last audible ass kicking before the end.

All in all, I'm not typically a Punk music fan, but this was cool enough to be enjoyable. This is certainly music you'd play at a party or a smoky dive bar, it has that fun 'throw back a beer... or a few' feel to it. There's still moments on this album that dive below the surface and catch your attention, which is always a positive thing for me as a listener. If you're a fan of CLUTCH, NOFX, or even more of the Punk Hard Rock like THE OFFSPRING, these guys are a great blend of all of them. Just add some kickass rebellious attitude and these guys are a guaranteed good time.
