Carnal Savagery - Scent of Death album cover

After the first or second release of a Metal band (especially during the outburst of the first or second wave of the genre), as they evolve and leave in the past their early formulas to embrace other forms of playing/recording, it's common to see bands trying to get their leftovers to use. In some cases, it's nothing more than cloning what was already exhausted by the use; but in others, good things can come. Doom Metal is a fine example of this, because the pioneers took what BLACK SABBATH left on their first three albums and created a new whole genre. Although they ae not a Doom Metal band, the Swedish quartet CARNAL SAVAGERY is a good example, as their third album, "Scent of Death", states clearly.

They play a form of Swedish Old School Death Metal, taking influences from names as UNLEASHED, DISMEMBER, ENTOMBED and CARNAGE, using a mix of influences from their early works to created their own work. Yes, this is an Old School Death Metal release, bearing the same brutality and aggressiveness of those days (and the same musical elements), but transposed to the present. A good way to see this release is answering this question: how the pioneers above would sound if their first albums were released now? But don't get the wrong idea, because the quartet knows how to evade of being a copy and do things on their own way. Even trying to have something that can be understood in the actual models of sonority, the quartet once more tried to bring the rough and brutal feeling of the past. And as the instrumental tunes chosen for the recordings are simple and filthy, they had a very good result in the end of everything, because anyone can understand what they're playing, but with the rough appeal that their music needs.

11 songs that can be in the apocalypse official soundtrack are presented on this album. But for a brutal taste of what "Scent of Death" stands for, "Deformed Bodies" (a massive song with fast tempos, but with slow rhythms during the chorus, creating a fine and catchy contrast, and what massive guitars, with catchy riffs and grotesque solos), "A Vacant Casket" (an oppressive track, filled with many funereal charming parts, and what a solid playing of bass guitar and drums), "Scent of Death" (a typical Old School Death Metal, with fast and slow parts entangling and allowing the vocals to show a great work), "Impaled Tortured and Left for Dead" (a typical slow Death Metal song, with emphasis on bass guitar and drums, and with guitars creating a putrid and sinister ambience), "Writhed in Agony" (plenty with influences of Hardcore and Thrash Metal), "Cranial Sodomy" (be prepared for the moshpit in your living room, because these catchy guitar riffs and rhythms are able to make even a corpse to shake its bones), and "To Moulder in a Grave" will do the job.

Once more CARNAL SAVAGERY is here to crack bones and break necks, so listen to and enjoy "Scent of Death".
