CARDIANT was formed early 2000s and has been working with the current lineup since 2008. The band has gone through several lineup changes over the years. "Mirrors" is the follow up album to 2013's "Verge". The band got several guest vocalists on the album to help expand their sound. "Mirrors and Me" begins with a synthetic sound, with a catchy up and down tempo. The drums kick in along with the guitars and you have a standard power metal track. However, every so often you have the synthetic up and down sound come back into the song. This sound along with the chorus line will have this song stuck in your head days later.
The piano that plays at the beginning of the track "Soul" is a nice tranquil beginning. Even when the rest of the instruments join, the song never really gets hard. Overall, it's a pretty mellow power ballad type of song. Its not a bad song by any means, however the band does nothing stellar with the formulaic song. Where "Soul" was mellow, the next track "Blank Star" is heavier. The instruments in this song keep up a steady thrum like a machine gun. The vocals are not overly heaving, however in this song there are places where the vocals take on an auto tune sound. It's not bad, and it gives the song a different flair.
"Shooting Star" is one of the songs on the album with a guest vocalist. After getting used to male vocals, the female vocals that start this song are a refreshing change. The vocalist has a beautiful voice and you get to soak it in, because this song takes on a minimalist approach. The most prominent instrument is the piano with some backing drums for most of the song. Even when the song kicks in a little more the vocals are the shining part of the song. "My Delusion" is another slow burn song on the album. The track begins with a type of chanting that gives the song an ethereal vibe. This is culminated with the way the vocals are sung. The song takes a bombastic turn with what feels like an entire orchestra behind the band. This is my favorite song on the album, it is truly a beautiful track with the mixture of slow bombastic instrumentals to the classic power metal riff. It all fits together nicely.
I enjoyed most of this album from CARDIANT. They are a decent power metal band, and this is a good outing for them. Some songs they experimented with their sound and those are the more enjoyable songs. The rest of the album is textbook power metal. Not that that is a bad thing, but it doesn't revolutionize the genre.
