From their EPK, “Hailing from Bordeaux/Herbignac, France, CARCOLH emerged in 2016, birthed from the ashes of MARBLE CHARIOT with a lineup forged from experienced musicians. CARCOLH has solidified their place in the doom metal scene, and now, present their third full-length album, "Twilight of the Mortals.” This latest offering promises to be their most ambitious and captivating work yet, pushing the boundaries of the genre with crushing riffs, haunting melodies, and a raw, visceral energy.”

The album has six songs, and “For Every Second…” is first. It’s a slow moving song with a simple riff, sometimes harmonized, and is akin to a hairy beast waking up from hibernation. I usually prefer harsh vocals with my Doom, but the cleans work well. “Ashes are Falling Down” is a little faster moving, and the beast has some more energy after the long hibernation. It picks up even more with an evil sounding riff, but so far, the sound isn’t overly enthusiastic. “The Battle is Lost” has a distinctive groove it within the riff and cadence of the vocals, and even some catchy elements. But headed down the stretch, the song fumbles a bit, and doesn’t complete its flight pattern.

“My Prayers are for Rain” is back to a snail’s pace…crawling through the swamp deeper and deeper into darkness. Some of the vocals are just a bit pitchy, but this just adds to the authenticity of the album. “Twilight of the Mortals” has some somber but melody tones in the clean guitars, as well as a good deal of atmosphere. More compositions like this could really help to diversify the album. “Empty Thrones” is a near-12-minute closer, and the riff is slow and crushing. It picks up close to the half-way mark, and the lead breaks fit right in, like a cousin to the family reunion. I’m afraid the song just drags on a little too long.  Sometimes, Metal bands just need to work a little harder at separating themselves from their peers, as well as injecting some energy into their work. This album seemed to suffer from both.
