Enemy
C.O.P.
Although some ignore, there's an old tradition in Northern countries of Europe on Hard Rock, Glam Metal and AOR. In the classic age of the genres (the middle of the 80's), many bands released great works, and names as TNT (of Norway) and EUROPE (of Sweden) opened the ways for the genre to get the North American parades back then. But the genres on those countries (namely Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland) always had a 'safe place', but today they're extremely successful there, what open possibilities for acts as C.O.P. to arise and release an album. And here is "Enemy".
The Swedish trio is composed by former members of acts as GRAND ILLUSION and DECOY, so they're experienced musicians on the genre. Of course the band lays its efforts on a form of Melodic Hard Rock blended with influences of AOR, creating an accessible musical work, plenty of melodies that hook the fans at first hearing, very good choruses, charming keyboards' parts, but with a massive energy that's personal of the genre. The formula isn't new at all, but the trio conceived an excellent musical work, plenty of charming instrumental arrangements and very good vocals. It's really a very good experience to hear this album. The sonority of "Enemy" was conceived with extreme care to balance things: in one hand, they need to have a clear and defined sound quality (what's usual for the genre, of course) to boost the melodic side of their songs. But on other hand, as the Nordic bands usually present, there's a dose of weight that can be felt in many moments, without tearing apart the musical accessibility of the album. It's really something very good to hear.
The album works as an entire experience, what means that all the songs are in the same creative level. As a second album must be (the successor of "State of Rock"), it points for a relevant act that deserves to be heard by the fans of the genre, especially for moments as "Enemy" (a dynamical and accessible song based on a good technical work of bass guitar and drums, but tempered wisely by charming keyboards parts), "For You" (where the silky side of the band's music becomes evident, even with the very good set of guitar arrangements, riffs and solos, and what great chorus), "Fighting Your Ghost" (a very good melodic ambience similar to those found on 80's releases, but with modern updates, and what lovely vocals), "The Gods" (lovely accessible melodies, again with charming vocals and fine keyboards' lines), "Higher" (a song with some heavier moments, with abrasive guitars and a strong rhythmic conduction of bass guitar and drums), "Rise Up" (a pure breed 80's Glam Metal/AOR song, plenty of Hard 'n' Heavy elements inherited of traditional Heavy Metal), and "Glorious".
