C-187 - Collision album cover

It was not so long ago when I read somewhere about this new super group (or should I say super project) that features credited musicians from well-known bands. Will a group of four amazing musicians manage to create something good or will they be lost trying to find the perfect sound that would mix the personality of every member? Collision was a pretty dynamic answer to my dilemma and I am just here thanking the Metal god for giving me the chance to listen to such bands!

C-187 is basically not a band; it is a project that guitarist Patrick Mameli (PESTILENCE) formed to express his musical ideas. ATHEIST's bassist Tony Choy, the always busy drummer Sean Reinert (CYNIC, DEATH, GORDIAN KNOT, AGHORA), and MNEMIC's ex singer Tony J.J. were the chosen ones to complete the line up.

The American/Dutch band was one of the things I was curious about to listen to since the involvement of three technical Death Metal musicians and a modern singer was a pretty strange thing in my humble opinion. The result of this collaboration is Collision, an album strong and solid as its musicians are. Even if it starts with a classic Death Metal part, technical drums and a great riff, it unfolds its appetite for the modern scene with many Nu Metal touches. Old school fans will be slightly disappointed since Mameli and his gang try to approach a heavier and catchier sound, something that will remind you of trendier bands. To be more exact, the music is something like the point where MUDVAYNE and AMERICAN HEAD CHARGE meet CYNIC and ATHEIST. The more modern sound as I said before is also the result of the great production.
The album was recorded at Spacelab Studios and was mixed by the credited producer Jacob Hansen. I don't think that the composing and playing skills of the specific musicians need any comments, and the vocals remain great, as they were in MNEMIC. There are also some parts were J.J. uses clean vocals and is more like he is speaking than singing. While listening to the album with a friend, I had the impression his clean vocals sound like Attila's (MAYHEM) and my friend thought that they sound like Chuck's (DEATH) vocals on the CONTROL DENIED album.

Anyway, the fact is that even though I thought it would be an old school Death Metal album, C-187 impressed me by delivering an uncompromising catchy and heavy assault. This way this band proves that it doesn't matter what you were, are or will be and they seem they don't care about what the fans would expect. Collision is an album filled with hate and raw power. Either you accept it and taste their gloriousness or you turn your head the other way and miss an incredible album. It is your choice after all.
